Hennie Marais moved to Panama 17 year ago. He was always a water sports aficionado and his love for the ocean began in Africa where, as a qualified scuba instructor dived throughout Africa and surfed at world famous surfing locations. The adventure of big game fishing led him to the Darien in Panama where he also found a love for the Wounaan and Embera Indians. Quite often you would find him on a Chingo up the Jaque or Pinas Rivers. Hennie regularly took clients kayaking in Darien and Pinas. In Panama Hennie has managed the worlds premier sport fishing operations since 1999 in both the Darien and in Veraguas.
The development of paddle sports struck me in South Africa and I saw the potential for Panama. We have so much water to explore: two oceans; many rivers and lakes all surrounded by the most pristine forest; and the island destinations of San Blas and Coiba are the best in the world. I think that in the future Panama has every chance of producing some top international quality paddlers to represent Panama at the Olmpics
Panamanian society’s affection for sport has grown dramatically and thousands of people are running, cycling, playing flag football. On the paddling side we have only one world class rowing event, the cayuco race. SUP racing has begun to be popular. Most events are flat water events. We have a few outriggers and surfski groups around.
Hennie and his staff are all people who have been dedicated to water-sports most of their lives.
